Sage Digitalis Wisecarver
NICKNAMES

BLOOD STATUS

Half-blood
DATE OF BIRTH

January 23, 1970 (Libra)
AGE

50
RANK & BRANCH

Expert Tech
GENDER & SEXUALITY

Genderfluid and pansexual. She/her, he/him and they/them pronouns are all gravy, but most default to "she" and rarely go for "he." Sage doesn't believe in any kind of restrictions on their person.
CURRENT RESIDENCE

Anywhere there's a lab is home. Sage owns a house in San Francisco, CA, but is more likely to be found taking micro naps in the Crow Bar lab. They have a hotel room too, but that's more for extra storage than a residence.
CONCEPT

Your Auror Bond's own chaotic gadget-inventing magitech genius Q.
PHYSICAL
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Sage decided on their look thirty years ago and will maintain it until the day they die. Hair is a sharp shoulder-length bob, bleached platinum blonde. Eyes are pale blue and ringed with black eyeliner, and minimal makeup besides that.

Sage favours "masculine" clothing like suits, vests and pants (never dresses or skirts), but eschews neutrals for jewel tone colours, eye-catching patterns or interesting textiles (velvet, leather, faux fur). They are never wearing anything less than twelve accessories at time—always an expensive Swiss watch, along with bracelets, necklaces, multiple rings, brooches, ties, scarves, etc. It's a bit showy, but Sage pulls it off with rock star confidence.
HEIGHT

5'8" but their heels always add at least two inches.

PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT
MOTIVATION • reason for becoming an auror

Sage took an unconventional route to this career, but they're in it now for the love of danger, excitement and fixing high-stakes problems. Right and wrong don't particularly concern Sage—they'd rather be in the right than in the wrong, sure, but "protecting people" and "stopping crimes" aren't motives that move their heart. Instead, they enjoy the challenge, and how the needs of the mission keep changing from day to day. They love working alongside interesting, dangerous people who do interesting, dangerous things. Downtime is Sage's worst enemy. The day they feel bored or unchallenged as an Auror, they're fully willing to walk away.
APPLICATION • skills and work methods

Sage is a leading expert in magitechnology, and a genius at creating tools and gadgets using magitech. Although they'll go out in the field when necessary, the lab is where they shine. Sage's methodology is "throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks." At any moment, they have a dozen projects going at once, and more failures than successes in their list of inventions.

But Sage's brilliance shows in how quickly they're able to assess what went wrong and come up with a new approach, and if you bring a problem to them, there's a good chance that Sage has a half-finished experiment somewhere around here that might do exactly what you need. In the lab, Sage considers themself the one in charge, but loves to bounce ideas off other people or pull in experts with different specialties. Sage's approach is undeniably chaotic, and is best when they have collaborators who are able to roll with it and still bring some order.
RISK • potential risks to themselves or others

1) Uses department resources on questionable side projects. Any off-the-cuff idea or LSD-induced concept will be explored by Sage in the lab. Sometimes this produces genuinely useful tools for agents, but most times it's surprise glitches and electric shocks and (contained!) explosions. Be careful where you step. And don't bother to ask Sage where the budget went, they lost track two months ago and insist you're better off not knowing how much this all cost.

2) Refuses to learn the name of any agents unless they've been here at least 7 years, because statistically, most of you aren't making it. Tells rookies this, frequently.

2b) Uses rookies as free labor. Pick up those boxes, Muscles, some of us have real work to do.

3) History of sympathizing with extremist groups. Still shows signs of being anti-Statute and being willing to entertain dangerous viewpoints, but is unlikely to act on any of it. Sage likes their stable position within the DMLE too much, and won't risk it unless it benefits themself most of all.
INTEGRITY • morality, authority and tradition

With nearly two decades of experience under their belt, Sage has little reverence for authority... unless it's Sage flexing theirs to boss rookies around. Getting reprimanded or any other kind of bureaucratic consequences doesn't scare them, but Sage isn't into rebelling for the sake of rebelling. That's for kids with something to prove. Sage is more amoral than anything else. They don't care for laws, tradition or even minimizing collateral damage; only finding whatever's the best tool for the job. They score high in Logic when it comes to Logic vs. Emotion. Their ethics follow a simple rule: whatever Sage wants to do, Sage will do. For the most part, what Sage wants to do falls in line with what the Auror office wants out of them: solving complicated tech problems, and building shiny gadgets to help agents in the field.
ATTITUDE • teamwork and general disposition

A jaded ennui has not yet set in, and may never. Sage's biggest problem in this area may be that they seem like they're having far too good of a time at work. They approach every mission like it's a field trip to Wizneyland (so many things to see, so many things to touch), and rarely treats dangerous situations with the proper seriousness. Sage trusts that the rest of you can handle the stress and anxiety, and leave the tinkering to them. You'll get along best with Sage if you don't mind someone who prefers keeps their emotions superficial.

Sage, on the other hand, thinks they can get along great with anybody. When they're bored, they often pester their colleagues for attention, or engage in some lite bullying of subordinates. Need help pulling off a complicated office prank? Let's see if there's anything in Sage's trove of toys.
HISTORY
HOMETOWN

Melbourne, Australia. Moved to San Francisco in their teens.
NOTABLE FAMILY

Grew up with a mother, father and a younger sister. Parents (not the worst) are retired. Sister (the normal one) is now married with kids. Sage (the strange one) married once during a three-day magitech conference in Las Vegas in 1995. It's probably annulled now. Probably.
AUROR ACADEMY

Ong's Hat (Class of 1990)
EARLY LIFE

Life started the day Sage moved out of their parents' house.
CAREER HISTORY

1988 (Age 18) — Sage Wisecarver is admitted to Ong's Hat, with aspirations of becoming a detective.

1989 (Age 19) — Sage witnesses the failure of Ong's Hat nomaj recruitment program. While they understand why Obliviation measures had to be taken, the experience radicalizes Sage into believing that society will only evolve if magical and nomaj worlds are properly integrated. The brief friendships that Sage formed with nomaj researchers leads to an interest in computers.

1990 (Age 20) — Sage finishes Auror training but declines placement in the DMLE, seeing it as enforcing the status quo. Instead, Sage ventures out to Silicon Valley and finds other like-minded wizards who are looking to improve magic with muggle technology.

1992 (Age 22) — Sage makes a name as one of the pioneers of the developing field of magitech. They assist in the creation of the magical programming language, Basilisk, and will contribute to it for the next six years.

1998 (Age 28) — Sage is contacted by Circe Dantes, anti-Secrecy extremist and a fellow graduate of Ong's Hat, and her partner, Ray Blackburn, one of the Obliviated nomaj agents of the 1989 test program. Circe sought out Blackburn last year, and they have been looking for allies for their cause. They convince Sage that the government will never act in their interests, and the only way to do away with the Statue of Secrecy is by force. Sage, Circe and Blackburn end up founding the Liberty Torch Society, which sought to bring "truth" to no-majs.

1999 (Age 29) — Sage invents the MIDI (Magical Implement Direct Interference), an experimental device which emits tinny music that interferes with the magical signals of wands, causing them to backfire. With several MIDIs playing all at once, you can create a widespread field that disables all wand use in the area. The followers of the Liberty Torch Society plan to expose the wizarding world during the televised New Year's ball drop (on Y2K for extra drama), using MIDIs to disable any Aurors who might try to stop them. However, one follower turns out to be an Auror spy, who presents Sage with evidence that Circe and Blackburn have killed people in the past (both dissenters and government agents), and are willing to kill more to achieve their goals. Sage assists the Aurors in taking down the Liberty Torch Society, and rigs all of their MIDIs to explode uselessly.

2000 (Age 30) — Sage agrees to come work for the DMLE, after a tense investigation of their knowledge of Circe and Blackburn's crimes. At first, it's a way for Sage to clear their name, but over time, they come to really enjoy it. Where else can you get paid for creating highly experimental gadgets to be used by secret agents?

2002 (Age 32) — Sage invents the Neuralyzer, inspired by a sci-fi muggle movie. Each device is packed with a powerful memory-erasing spell that can be triggered even by agents who are not well-versed in memory charms. Tests show that Neuralyzer usage carries a disquietingly higher rate of brain damage than regular, proper Obliviation. The Neuralyzer remains not approved for field use, but Sage insists it's a "work in progress."

2006 (Age 36) — Sage invents Charmed Sticky Notes, small paper notes that use magic to stick to any surface. These are functionally no different from non-magical sticky notes, except that when you call out a special incantation, the pad of sticky notes will explode and cover every available surface in the room.

2009 (Age 39) — Sage invents the Exploding Pen, a ballpoint pen that's also a magical grenade. Two clicks of the cap arms its four-second fuse, and another three disarm it. Except for 15% of the pens where it's the reverse (3 clicks to arm, 2 clicks to defuse), and there isn't really any way of telling which one you have until it blows up.

2011 (Age 41) — Sage invents the [REDACTED], an experimental device which [REDACTED]. The only prototype is locked away in the DMLE archives.

2015 (Age 45) — Sage invents the Sageberry Pie, a low cost and portable magical device that can be easily re-enchanted and reprogrammed by amateur magitech enthusiasts. (It gets its name from its pie-like shape, and easily "fillable" contents.) Despite receiving offers by prominent Silicon Valley companies to buy their invention, Sage releases the model plans as open source, believing that magitech should be accessible. The Sageberry becomes popular among learners of magitech and artificing.

2020 (Age 50) — Sage joins Operation Crowbar as a tech expert.
SKILLS
LANGUAGES

English (fluent). German and Japanese (semi-fluent), which Sage picked up mainly while attempting to parse foreign magitech documentation at 3 AM.
HOBBIES

Inventing new gadgets, running experiments, building neural networks, playing 80's rock music in the lab without headphones, ignoring people who tell them to turn down the music, snacking while working with delicate machinery, browsing thrift shops
SKILLS
Obliviation [0]

(Mastery of advanced memory alteration spells.)

Despite their history, Sage does not morally object to memory charms. Every tool has its place. ("For instance, I can erase this mind-numbing conversation I had with you," Sage might say.)
Analysis [0]

(Examining magical objects to determine their function or origin.)

Sage has an array of tools on hand for inspecting magical objects and testing for different properties, but their favourite method for figuring out how it works is still to push the button/open the box/shake it/etc. No one's died yet!
Artificing [2]

(Expertise in the crafting and enchanting of magical objects.)

Sage is a genius at combining magitech and artificing to create complex magical machines. Unfortunately, they're now banned from building robots anywhere on DMLE property after one too many experiments went rogue and had to be put down by a duelist.
Magic Hacking [2]

(Expertise in magitech, as well as mixing magic and muggle tech.)

They literally wrote the book. (Although Sage's expertise lies more in building things, versus hacking systems or developing automated routines for efficiency. Sage has never been efficient in their life.)
Demolitions [1]

(Expertise with explosives, magical or otherwise.)

Sage claims that every device they create is rigged to explode at the push of a button. Or if it gets too muddy. Or submerged in water. Or jostled too hard. Try not to break it.
MISCELLANEOUS
WAND

Walnut, drop bear claw, 12¼ inches
PATRONUS

Octopus
OTHER DETAILS

• Mx. July in the '00 Gentlemen of the DMLE Fundraising Calendar.

• Fills their free time with "Catfwizhing" (new name pending), a magic AI project. This is a network of dozens of bot-driven social media accounts that use the likenesses and superficial traits of Sage's coworkers. These bots don't appear to serve any purpose except to try to forge friendships with normal people and see how long it takes before these people realize something's off. Results are still inconclusive as to whether locals are getting weirded out because they're bots, or because Sage's coworkers are all deeply unlikable people.

• During the early days of magitech development, many people in the field (who did not meet Sage in person) assumed Sage Wisecarver was male based on their name alone. Sage, who had always been ambivalent about being seen as female, was fine with this. Over the years, Sage's feelings about being seen as either a man or a woman have evened out. "Both" is a fine answer. "Neither" is good too.
